 Here is a really nice blues chart with fresh, interesting lines and great ensemble passages.  This could be called Newer Than New, because Don just wrote this for John Pizzarelli's new band in New York.  As recorded on the BMG CD The Big Shorty Rogers Express, this is a terrific romp through a fast Swing, featuring solos by Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Bari.

 This chart was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the CD I Told You So (out-of-print).  Everyone who hears this tune loves it! It has a neat, unique feel to it, and it is a wonderful teaching tool for young players.  Can you imagine a chart which is this easy to play being played and recorded by Maynard Ferguson? Well, that just demonstrates how catchy and wonderful this chart is.

 This great Kenton classic, as recorded on the album "Live from Redlands University," is a swinging, happy chart which allows for lots of blowing space and is combined with great ensemble sections.  This is a great swingin' blues chart that is playable by most any band.  You've probably heard this chart on the great recordings such as In A JazzOrbit (Holman's Band) or the Terry Gibbs DreamBand CDs.

 Geoff has scored a very hip, musical easy-to-play chart in the classic blues form, using his incomparable melodic and harmonic sense of things.  Bill Holman's compositions in the library of the Stan Kenton Orchestra were some of the most exciting pieces ever conceived for jazz orchestra.  Here is a great swing/shuffle chart by Les.

This was recorded by Maynard's incredible band on the Message from Newport LP.  As recorded by the Tonight Show Band on "Once More With Feeling" (Amherst), Holman takes a fresh look at this wonderful old jazz standard.  Exactly as recorded by Oliver Nelson's Orchestra and featuring Joe Newman on trumpet.

 This is recorded on the Tonight Show Band CD "Once More With Feeling" (Amherst Records).  Ellen has a marvelous knack for being able to write sophisticated music which is not difficult to perform.  This "edited" version of "Where's Teddy" (as played and recorded by Maynard Ferguson's Birdland Dream Band) is much more playable for the trumpet section as a whole than the original "pro" version (which is also available).
