This may be the all-time greatest jazz arrangement of a standard tune. Bill Holman wrote this arrangement for the Kenton Orchestra in the early '60's to feature Marvin Stamm on trumpet (of course). Kenton never recorded it, so this is a brand-new chart to most people. No guitar. 5-4-4-3  As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on Stage Door Swings, this medium-up swing chart comes roaring out of the chute with a brass pop and leads into the piano stating the melody.

Mulligan contributed only a few charts to the Kenton Library, and they are all classics.  Bill Mathieu's arrangements, done for the Stan Kenton Orchestra, were some of the most beautiful pieces ever recorded by that band.  Here is a terrific medium swing chart, also written for Stan Kenton in the 50s.

You and I and George
Retail Price: $20.00
This is a wonderful feature for tenor saxophone (as recorded by Bill Perkins).   Originally arranged for George Roberts and the Stan Kenton Orchestra, Johnny Richards' treatment of the beautiful ballad "Yesterdays" is a bass trombone feature throughout. This cute little novelty piece is one that Stan Kenton would include in the program to feature Red Kelly on vocals.  It was recorded on "Live at the Tropicana", and will make for a wonderful, crowd pleasing addition providing that extra variety that every program needs.
You Go To My Head - arr. Bob Graettinger Young Blood - Gerry Mulligan Younger Than Springtime - arr. Lennie Niehaus
Young Blood - Gerry Mulligan
Retail Price: $55.00
It is hard to explain the characteristic of this arrangement except to say that, even though Graettinger writes some very adventurous and futuristic textures and lines, you always know where and what the melody is.  Mulligan's writing for the Kenton Band was fairly minimal in quantity but extraordinary in quality.  Lennie Niehaus wrote a series of terrific arrangements for the Stan Kenton Orchestra (this was recorded on the "Stage Door Swings" CD).

Holman wrote this to feature (of course) Zoot Sims on tenor saxophone.
