Ku-Damm - Oliver Nelson
Retail Price: $50.00
This straight-ahead blues tune features the saxophone section with a long, wonderful soli that grows for over 70 bars before ripping into the solo section.   Originally recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their album Afrique, “Kilimanjaro” is a mesmerizing, easy-feeling Latin composition which pulses along by the constant tumbao bass groove and infectious percussion.   Based on the blues, as so much of Oliver’s music was, this bright swing (waltz feel) starts with an aggressive line for woodwind doubles and adds to its intensity with the entrance of the trumpets a short while later.

Solos (edited) - Bill Holman / arr. Curnow South of the Border (Down Mexico Way) - arr. Billy Byers Stompin' at the Savoy (Edited) - arr. Bill Holman
A straight-ahead, swinging chart based on “rhythm changes,” this is a hip, angular melody that sets up some powerful ensemble passages.    Originally recorded on the album Frankly Basie, “South of the Border” has it all – Basie piano solos (written out), roaring ensemble passages, a swinging saxophone soli, and some compelling key changes.   The chart swings like mad from downbeat to the end. This is one of Bill Holman's best early charts, and he turned everyone on their ear with it.
