This great bossa rock composition by Duke Pearson was featured in an octet form on his 1967 record 'The Right Touch.' Duke fleshed this funky tune out for a full big band, though it was never recorded. This arrangement has been engraved directly from Duke's original manuscript - this is not a transcription. The tune calls for a tenor, trumpet, and flute solos. In addition, there is an open solo section and for the trumpet solo he indicated trading fours between trumpets 1-3. Both altos double flute and trombone 4 is bass. This is another exciting arrangement from Duke Pearson. The sound sample is from Duke's octet recording as there is no recording of this arrangement. But, it will give you a good idea of the sound. Please note the ranges below. Ranges:Trumpets 1-4: G6; E6; B4; F4 Trombones 1-2: C4; Gb3

This medium-up Latin arrangement was previously recorded in a quintet form on Horizon Reassembled (Bobby Watson & Horizon - Palmetto 2102). This big band version has not yet been recorded. The arrangement starts with sax quartet intro. There is a solo section with backgrounds (solo changes in C, B-flat, E-flat) and a shout chorus. Medium up Latin (quarter note = ca. 120).

UNIT 7

In addition to the two full-length records that the Duke Pearson Big Band recorded in the late 1960s, there were numerous other arrangements that didn't get recorded. This arrangement of Sam Jones' standard 'Unit 7' is one of those tunes that was performed live by the band but never recorded. This arrangement alternates between swing (for A sections) and Latin (for bridge) and features a trumpet solo (written for trumpet 4) and alto saxophone solo. Both solos have Duke's typical great backgrounds happening. Trumpet 1 goes to F6 and trombones 1 & 2 get to C5. There are no saxophone doubles. In addition, a guitar part is included. The sound sample is courtesy of the Empire Jazz Orchestra. Ranges:Trumpet 1: F6 Trombones 1 & 2: C5
