Originally written for the Sammy Nestico "Dark Orchid" recording and later reprised on "A Portrait Of Sammy," this classic swing tune gives all of the solo work to piano -- first in the opening 48 bars, then again in the middle and ending segments. In between the band tackles a terrific double counterpoint chorus and carries a full ensemble shout. Altos and tenors double on flute.  standard jazz ensemble As recorded by the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band in 1980 for their Farewell To Mingus album, this fast bebop outing for proficient players features a big full-band opening, sax and brass section solis, and solo space for piano, tenor (or alto), and bass. Directors also have the option of repeating one solo chorus to feature trumpet as well. Duration ca. 6:00.   standard jazz ensemble The first chorus should be a two-beat feel before transitioning into a solid, straight-ahead 4-beat feel at the trombone chorus. Make sure the time has a sense of forward momentum throughout. The voicing at measure 69 sounds best if everyone takes some deep breaths and blows! Trombone figures must be short and crisp at measure 85, while saxes and trumpets are phrasing their lines. At measure 104 things should be nice and easy until the build-up at 108 for the ending.  standard jazz ensemble; trumpets double on flugelhorn

Duration 5:00.    standard jazz ensemble; S(A)A(S)TTB saxes; opt. 5th Trumpet This adaptation of the Charlie Parker classic features a fast swing tempo and the bop-style lines you'd expect, but it also pays tribute to Bird by casting selected horns in intimate, combo-like settings within the full ensemble format. The solo work goes to lead alto, and alternating sax and brass solis culminate in a shout that takes this chart out strong.          standard jazz ensemble; 1st Alto doubles on soprano sax The Black Swamp is adapted from the first movement of "Homeland Suite for Wind Ensemble," which won the Dallas Wind Symphony's composition contest in 2003 as a brass ensemble version. Solo space is provided for baritone sax, trumpet and trombone. Duration 6:55.  standard jazz ensemble; altos double on flute Recorded on the SWR Big Band CD Fun Time and adapted from the tune Blue Daniel, this chart romps along in "four" instead of  "three" and sounds harder than it is. As recorded by Buddy Rich on the album of the same name, this 'fat-back' rock classic begins with a repeated vamp featuring solo guitar and/or piano before a horn trio -- alto, tenor, trumpet -- paves the way for the full ensemble entrance. This is high-intensity writing for all, and solo space is reserved for tenor and guitar. A sudden switch to swing in the final bars provides a perfect ending. Rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued. Duration 5:15.  standard jazz ensemble Drummer Joe LaBarbera pays homage to Art Blakey in this wonderful number arranged by brother John. Trumpet, tenor and trombone can be featured in front of the band throughout, and the drummer has lots of great opportunities for soloing, starting with an open solo at the beginning and finishing with several dramatic fills at the end. The solo section can also be opened up at the director's discretion. Duration 3:40.  standard jazz ensemble Recorded by Woody Herman on his album From East To West (Concord Records), solo space is given to trumpet, alto and tenor. Demanding section work throughout and a mighty shout chorus near the end keeps everyone fully engaged from start to finish. Duration 5:30-6:00.  standard jazz ensemble

Written for and recorded by the Sammy Nestico Orchestra on the CD This Is The Moment, this minor blues explores a variety of colors within the full-band setting. For this reason, striving for good blend on the alto/trumpet and tenor/trombone figures are very important. If possible, the guitarist should comp most of his/her part rather than playing it in straight time.  standard jazz ensemble Originally written in 1946 by Charlie Parker soon after his longtime friend and musical companion Dizzy Gillespie left him in Los Angeles to return to New York City, this uptempo setting for big band in the original key of Bb features the I Got Rhythm changes on which Parker's tune is based. A wide-open solo for lead alto, shorter solo segments for 3 trombones, and an 8-bar unaccompanied solo for the drummer allows ample stretching room for proficient players. Duration 3:45.  standard jazz ensemble Featured on the John Fedchock New York Big Band CD Up & Running, this lively romp for proficient groups features a funky New Orleans "second line" street beat. Solos are assigned to bass clarinet (or bari sax) and trumpet. The fun, quirky melody leads to some plunger mute antics with the brass section, and Fedchock's signature voicings provide lots of harmonic integrity. After the trumpet solo, an exciting shout chorus features interjections by a Dixieland band (trumpet, bass clarinet, trombone, alto sax). The piece concludes with a final march down Bourbon Street with building backgrounds, leaving the soloists to fade off into the distance. Written for and recorded by Wayne Bergeron on his Grammy winning WAG Records release, You Call This A Living?, this jazz waltz arrangement of Tschaikowsky's classic work from The Nutcracker is an ideal showcase for a big band and its star trumpet soloist. The band parts are scored at the medium advanced level, while the solo part is advanced. You'll love the way Liston has modernized the chord structure while staying true to the composer's intent. The rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued. Duration 4:30.  standard jazz ensemble plus solo trumpet; section trumpets double on flugelhorn As recorded by the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra for their Monday Night album, the opening rhythm section vamp sets the stage for the entrance of the featured soprano (or alto) sax soloist. With the exception of an expandable solo for piano midway through and some great full-band choruses, the soloist carries the day here. The chart closes out strong with a series of improvised solo cadenzas. Duration ca. 5:15      standard jazz ensemble; 1st Alto has opt. double on soprano Set in a laidback swing groove, this chart features a sax chorus, some driving ensemble sections, and solos for trombone, tenor sax, trumpet and piano (suggested solos provided for all).  Sammy says that maintaining a solid sense of time will make playing this chart sound more like fun than work. A full-ensemble shout closes out this chart in fine style. Rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued. Duration ca. 7:00.  standard jazz ensemble; 1st Alto Sax has opt. flute double; 2 trumpets double on flugelhorn

A brass chorale opens this driving jazz waltz for proficient jazz bands. Based on the chord changes to the popular standard I Remember You, it's full of densely-voiced altered dominant and suspended harmonies, coupled with interesting rhythms. Solo space is offered for piano, followed by a section where the drummer trades 4's with the various wind sections. Before the rousing finish the chart modulates briefly, then returns to the home key. At the end of the piece, the opening chorale is reprised in tempo before an exciting series of solo breaks for the drummer. Rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued. Duration 5:00.  standard jazz ensemble; SATTB saxes Dedicated to the Hollywood Saxophone Quartet, this programmatic suite portraying the characters from Dorothy's fabled journey to Oz requires all players to serve in a variety of solo, lead and supporting roles. While use of the narration creates an incredibly memorable concert experience for all, the music stands well on its own merits. Duration 15:00 with narrator; 11:10 without narrator and Prologue Prologue; Dorothy; Toto; The Scarecrow; The Tin Woodman; The Cowardly Lion; The Wizard S(A)ATB Saxes Performed by Count Basie & His Orchestra, this classic swing excursion in bright 4 gets off to a great start with an ad lib piano solo followed by a full-group chorus. Then both tenors step into the solo spotlight and take turns on solo choruses. The drummer also gets a chance to bust loose for a few bars before taking the band out with a shout. Rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued.  standard jazz ensemble plus F horns (2) & tuba
