Just because a big band piece was recorded years ago does not mean it cannot impact an audience of today. With this festival program you will see the power of music that stands the test of time! Your band will thoroughly enjoy performing this exceptional music!

Sierra Music recommends programming your festival performance in the following order:

Foxy - Slide Hampton
Written for the Maynard Ferguson Dream Band, this is one of Slide's personal favorites. It is set in a medium swing feel (and boy, does it swing!) with solo space for tenor and trumpet. "Foxy" is one of those iconic charts in the history of big band composition. This chart is guaranteed to start your festival program on the right foot! 5-4-4-3 (or original instrumentation)

I Hope In Time A Change Will Come (longer v.) - Oliver Nelson / arr. Curnow
This "longer" version is exactly the same as the original, except it provides more than one chorus of this stunning melody and allows for the soloist to improvise on part of the second chorus. Originally recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, this is possibly the most heart-rendering, beautiful melody Nelson ever wrote. It features soprano saxophone throughout in a slow, 12/8 feel. This is Nelson at his spiritual best! 5-4-4-3

Bemsha Swing - Thelonious Monk / arr. Holman
While this chart is certainly a classic, it has only recently been put in print (2012). This is Bill Holman at his finest as he sets this great Monk tune in a straight-eighth Latin feel. There is wonderful ensemble writing throughout, and solo space for alto, trumpet, piano and drums. This is a fantastic way to close any festival program and your audiences will absolutely love it! 5-4-4-3
