 Pat Metheny is known for his beautiful melodies, and "Back In Time" is no exception.   Set as a bright swing, this chart opens up with an energetic unison saxophone line, punctuated with brass hits.    Bob Curnow provides yet another great arrangement of one of Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays' biggest hits. Originally recorded on their album Letter From Home, "Beat 70" is an exciting up-tempo Latin/fusion tune that will leave your band and audiences humming this catchy melody for the rest of the day! Ranges are mostly modest and rhythmic concerns are minimal. There is solo space for tenor saxophone, trumpet, piano and drums. This chart is a must-have! 5-4-4-4

  As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, “Berlin Bei Nacht” is the 4th movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite.    The music of Steely Dan has come to Sierra Music! From the same masterful pen that brought the music of Radiohead and Astor Piazzola, the late, great Fred Sturm wows us once again. Originally arranged for the HR Big Band (Germany), this rock-ish, heavy-shuffle tune provides hard hitting melody sections, plenty of room for improvisation (as you choose), and raucous ensemble interplay.  James Miley brings to Sierra another hip arrangement of a great contemporary tune.

Here is a slow, gutty, "down-home" type of blues written for and recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on the Adventures In Blues album.  Bill Holman wrote some of the best music played by the Stan Kenton Orchestra and "Boop Boo Be Doop" is surely one of those charts. This may be one of the most beautiful compositions Sierra Music has ever published.

 Here is a deeply emotional, gorgeous ballad from the self-titled album Lyle Mays.  The Count Basie Orchestra performed the music of Billy Byers for many, many years. His arrangement of "Come Fly With Me" is recorded on the Basie album Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra. Set in an up-tempo swing feel, Byers hits it hard from bar 1 and doesn't let up until the end of the chart.  Much like Neil Hefti's "Li'l Darlin'," this Billy Byers original exemplifies quiet, warm ensemble writing at its finest.

 Fred Sturm brings us another fresh, innovative arrangement.  Arranged by Bill Holman and originally recorded by the Woody Herman Orchestra, featuring Stan Getz, on their album Live at the Concord Jazz Festival, "The Dolphin (El Delfrin)" is written in a beautiful Bossa Nova setting and features tenor saxophone throughout.  This is a beautiful, lush, straight-eighth ballad on the popular Cole Porter tune "Easy To Love.

Set in a contemporary pop/swing feel, this arrangement makes a wonderful contrast to any program.  Here is a very clever and catchy original Latin composition from one of our newer composers, Jamey Simmons.    The music of Steely Dan has come to Sierra Music! Originally arranged for the HR Big Band (Germany), the late, great Fred Sturm has given us another rock chart worthy of any band's library. In typical Sturm fashion, the beginning of "FM" is a kaleidoscope of independent fragments culminating with the original Steely Dan intro as it moves into the melody played by clarinets.

   The music of Steely Dan has come to Sierra Music! The late, great Fred Sturm originally arranged this for the HR Big Band (Germany), and Sierra is thrilled to add it to its catalog. Set as a slow rock/gospel, there is beautiful, lush ensemble writing througout the piece. Another great chart to add to the ever-growing Pat Metheny Series, Bob Curnow has arranged this down-right funk tune originally recorded on the PMG album We Live Here. DeRosa’s delightful, contemporary setting on “God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen” has a moderate samba feel and features the soprano saxophone throughout.

 Many have tried, but few have been able to match the incredible swing that happens when you combine Billy Byers' arranging with the Count Basie Orchestra. Originally recorded on the Basie album Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, "Hey, Jealous Lover" is a medium-swing chart that will excite your band and audiences alike!    This is a lovely, cool, easy-swing chart that explores linear material as written for and recorded by the North Texas One O'clock Lab Band (Lab 2013).  In 2012 we introduced Omar Thomas to the list of Sierra composers and arrangers.

As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their album Hits of the 50's & 60's - This Time By Basie, Quincy Jones' arrangement of "I Can't Stop Loving You" will bring your audiences to their feet.  Quincy Jones wrote some incredible arrangements on very popular tunes for the Count Basie Orchestra.  This arrangement by Oliver Nelson is a gorgeous alto saxophone feature of Cole Porter's "I Worship You.

 Short, sweet and swingin'! Willie Maiden's arrangement of "I'll Be Seeing You" packs a whopper in a tiny box, making this chart perfect as an encoure closer for any set. As recorded by Maynard Ferguson and his orchestra on the album Dancing Sessions, Willie's arrangement makes great use of the trombone section as they carry the melody upfront before passing it around to the rest of the band.  Billy Byers' arrangement of "I'll Never Smile Again" will take you back to a time when dancing to a slow swing tune, played by a live big band in a ballroom filled with amazing sounds, was the absolute best part of any weekend. Originally recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their album Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Byers' arrangement uses the full ensemble to state the melody complete with a scattering of Basie fills, followed by a written out piano solo.  As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the album "Frankly Basie; Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra," this arrangement by Billy Byers is a fantastic medium-slow swing tune.

 As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the album "Frankly Basie; Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra," this arrangement by Billy Byers is a fantastic medium-slow swing tune.  Originally recorded by Cannonball Adderley on his album Domination and inspired by Oliver Nelson, Bob Curnow's adaptation/arrangement of "Introduction to a Samba" features the alto saxophone and trumpet duet stating the melody supported by a traditional samba feel.   This straight-ahead blues tune features the saxophone section with a long, wonderful soli that grows for over 70 bars before ripping into the solo section.

  Originally recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their album Afrique, “Kilimanjaro” is a mesmerizing, easy-feeling Latin composition which pulses along by the constant tumbao bass groove and infectious percussion.   Based on the blues, as so much of Oliver’s music was, this bright swing (waltz feel) starts with an aggressive line for woodwind doubles and adds to its intensity with the entrance of the trumpets a short while later.  Originally recorded by the North Texas University 2 O'Clock Band, Vern Sielert's arrangement of "Like Someone In Love" is set in an even-eighths Latin feel.

 Sierra Music is happy to add David Springfield to their long list of distinguished composers and arrangers.  This chart was originally written for Charlie Parker to perform with the Stan Kenton Orchestra.  Recorded by the Buddy Rich Big Band on both their albums "Big Swing Face" and "The New One," this great Bill Reddie chart is one of the most dynamic tunes Buddy every played.

 Another wonderful original by Patty Darling, "The Next Chapter" is a fresh, contemporary easy-to-play chart.  As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their album "This Time By Basie," Quincy Jones has arranged another laid-back, swinging masterpiece.  As recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra on the "Newport" album, this clever Willie Maiden arrangement is set in three sections - ballad, medium swing and fast swing.

   Here is a free swinging, remarkable chart from a new writer for Sierra. Allan Ganley's reputation and legacy in England drew our attention to this marvelous arrangement of "One Morning in May."    This chart is a great addition to a growing collection of Radiohead charts that has provided bands throughout the world with wonderful, unique choices for their jazz band programs. Patty Darling has a lock on Radiohead after providing her exquisite chart on "Idioteque," a best-selling arrangement.   Set as an up-tempo swing, the tenor saxophone is featured throughout and has lots of solo space to make this tune its own.

Don Sebesky, one of the world's premier arrangers, took a magnificant Rolf Ericson tune and created an arrangement unlike anything you've heard before.    Rich DeRosa has created a marvelous Latin composition in a baião feel that is recorded by the North Texas Two O'Clock Lab Band. It comes out of the gate roaring. The very hip melody is stated by flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, trumpet and piano.

 A straight-ahead, swinging chart based on “rhythm changes,” this is a hip, angular melody that sets up some powerful ensemble passages.    Originally recorded on the album Frankly Basie, “South of the Border” has it all – Basie piano solos (written out), roaring ensemble passages, a swinging saxophone soli, and some compelling key changes.   The chart swings like mad from downbeat to the end. This is one of Bill Holman's best early charts, and he turned everyone on their ear with it.
