Melancholy Lullaby was written in 1939 by Benny Carter and became his theme song. In the 1970s Benny revised his 1939 arrangement so that it featured a solo alto saxophonist along with a full big band. This is a very beautiful, late-night, show closer ballad. Brass are on cup mutes throughout. This arrangement was never recorded by Benny. Written for the Claude Thornhill Orchestra AS RECORDED BY MILES DAVIS

PENTHOUSE DAWN, A
Retail Price: $65.00
O Little Town of Bethlehem begins with a rubato chorale with flugelhorn lead. 4 flutes and 2nd tenor has clarinet double. First time through is acappella. Second verse has a trombone solo with piano accompaniment for 12 bars. The whole arrangement has no other rhythm section. Joy to the World has trumpet lead. Straight forward acappella is cut time. Broad ensemble into 4 at the end. Recorded by Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass on Big Band Christmas. Wynton says, "Because O Tannenbaum is German in origin, I was trying to write an American version of a chorale. It is somewhat in the style of Bach, with the eighth notes giving it motion. But above all, it is an example of blues harmony." Recorded by the Jazz Interactions Orchestra

SILENT NIGHT
Retail Price: $50.00
WRITTEN FOR DUKE ELLINGTON Wynton says about Silent Night, "We were trying to capture the kind of swooning that goes on during the lights-out calm that sits over a city at night. That mood is set against the incredible purity of Kathleen Battle's voice, which is reminiscent of the Nativity scene, the beauty of this woman and her child. In my plunger solo, I'm emulating the town crier delivering the news through the streets of the city, taking the translation from the angel of Kathleen Battle." This has been newly edited and engraved and comes with a complete score! Exactly as recorded! The arragnement begins with an a capella brass section later joined by 4 flutes and a bass clarinet. Alto sax 2 is featured on a fully written out solo section. I Came Upon a Midnight Clear is where the rhythm section joins in with a swing waltz feel. The guitar is featured throughout the second section. The saxophones close out the arrangement with very high notes (see ranges). This may be played down an octave if need be. This was recorded by Rob McConnell on the Big Band Christmas album.

SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME
Retail Price: $65.00
SOUVENIR
Retail Price: $65.00
Recorded by Terry Gibbs Dream Band Recorded by Ella Fitzgerald Souvenir was performed in 1977 during a Jazz at the Philharmonic tour sponsored by Norman Granz, and this arrangement was recorded in 1986. The original title on the parts is 'That's How it Goes.' An additional source was a score that was prepared by Phil Woods; Souvenir has become part of his active book when he performs with big bands. This is a straight-forward alto saxophone feature ballad that is played very slowly, and for young bands, this is a perfect opportunity to introduce thinking in double-time (to play slow ballads correctly).
