Recorded by Ella Fitzgerald This tune was written by Oliver Nelson in 1961 and recorded for his Straight Ahead album with Eric Dolphy. John Fedchock crafted this big band arrangement of the melody in 1997 and recorded it for his album On the Edge. This chart features alto saxophone and trumpet playing the melody. Lengthy solo sections with exciting backgrounds are featured for both those players. This is another standout arrangement by Fedchock full of great sectional writing and sophisticated harmonies! Wynton says "I thought of the clarinet, soprano, and alto as little people who irritate humorously with little repetition. The baritone and the trombone are delivering the more serious message at the bottom. So you have the contrast between the gravity of the lower register shout and the levity and clarity of the upper register. It is also a minor blues with two feelings of meter, one straight 3/4, the other 6/4. In the upper reed parts I'm also turning the beats around the way they used to in the old stride school." RECORDED BY SUPERSAX Recorded by Benny Goodman It is with particular pride that Jazz Lines Publications presents edited and corrected publications of the library of octets composed by Alec Wilder, written between 1938 and 1940, with another group written in 1947. These were recorded for the Brunswick, Columbia and Vox labels, and a CD compilation of these octets is available from the Hep label. During the late thirties, several composers were intrigued with short-form composing using jazz rhythms and harmonies. Wilder was writing arrangements for dance band and writing songs when he had a meeting with Joe Higgins, an executive with Brunswick Records. Higgins envisioned a new series that would also become popular and sell records. Wilder suggested that the ensemble be made up of woodwinds (so he could include such fellow Eastman School of Music alumni as Mitch Miller and Jimmy Carroll) with bass and drums. He was listening to the harpsichord quite a bit during this time – his friend John Barrows was composing pieces for the instrument, and Miller was performing concerts with harpsichordist Yella Pessl - so Wilder added that instrument as well. Alec wrote a test piece for the ensemble, and Brunswick executive and Wilder friend Morty Palitz gave the okay for a recording session to be held during December of 1938. Wilder’s titles for these octets are sometimes autobiographical, sometimes elusive. Very early on, Wilder realized that the clarinets and flute could play swing rhythms easily, but the double-reeds could not (today many saxophone players double on oboe and bassoon, so this is no longer an issue). He successfully exploits this ‘swing vs. straight’ issue in his music, part of the reason why these pieces are even more popular today. He was also well trained in classical music: Sea Fugue, Mama is indeed a swinging classical fugue.

This great bossa rock composition by Duke Pearson was featured in an octet form on his 1967 record 'The Right Touch.' Duke fleshed this funky tune out for a full big band, though it was never recorded. This arrangement has been engraved directly from Duke's original manuscript - this is not a transcription. The tune calls for a tenor, trumpet, and flute solos. In addition, there is an open solo section and for the trumpet solo he indicated trading fours between trumpets 1-3. Both altos double flute and trombone 4 is bass. This is another exciting arrangement from Duke Pearson. The sound sample is from Duke's octet recording as there is no recording of this arrangement. But, it will give you a good idea of the sound. Please note the ranges below. This lovely Benny Carter swing ballad was written in 1996 for Benny to use on his visits to college campuses. The arrangement is designed to feature an alto saxophone soloist with the ensemble. The ensemble states the "A" section melody while the also soloist takes the bridge for the first chorus. The 2nd chorus features an alto solo for the "A" sections (with sax section backgrounds), a sax soli for the bridge and then the ensemble for the last "A". This is not a difficult arrangement and would be a great opportunity to allow an alto player to be in the spotlight! The recording features Benny with the Eastman College Jazz Ensemble. From the Count Basie book of the '60s, this straight ahead blues swings with a sax section soli after the head. Features trumpet and tenor solos and two out-choruses of typical Basie ensemble finishing up. Includes guest tenor solo, but is optional. Recorded by Manhattan School of Music. For many years facsimile copies of Frank Foster's score and parts were reproduced and published by Walrus Music Publishing. This edition has been carefully prepared and engraved from these parts. Several note errors that were found in the original set of parts have been corrected as well. Articulations and dynamics that reflect the Count Basie Band interpretation have been included so that this arrangement may be faithfully reproduced. This would make a great festival piece or concert opener/closer! Recorded by Artie Shaw Written for Helen O'Connell

Recorded by Charlie Parker with Strings (From the notes by Jeffrey Sultanof): Background: Tadd Dameron was one of the most influential composer/arrangers in American music. Born in 1917, he wrote for bands led by Jimmie Lunceford, Count Basie, Billy Eckstine (many original compositions later performed by the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra were originally written for Eckstine), Ted Heath and Tommy Dorsey. He also arranged for Sarah Vaughan, Pearl Bailey and the underrated Kay Penton. Dameron led various groups for live gigs and recordings, and the musicians he played with constituted a who's who of jazz. At one time or another his ensembles included Fats Navarro, Freddie Webster, Charlie Rouse, Kenny Clarke, Kai Winding, Wardell Gray, J.J. Johnson, Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, John Coltrane and Clifford Brown. Unfortunately Dameron was institutionalized in Kentucky for drug possession from 1958 through 1961. While still in prison, he contributed several arrangements to a Blue Mitchell album on Riverside Records, and when he was released, Riverside wanted him to make an album of his own. The Magic Touch was the result, and this resulted in various composing and arranging assignments, most notably for Benny Goodman, who commissioned several scores from Dameron for his 1962 big band that made an historic tour of the Soviet Union. The Music: Good Bait had originally been written for Count Basie, and was copyrighted in 1944. Dameron also arranged the tune for the Billy Eckstine Orchestra, and when that ensemble folded, Dizzy Gillespie added the setting to his book, playing it frequently. Basie began playing it in 1948 after Gillespie popularized it. In 1962, publisher Bregman, Vocco &Conn asked Dameron to arrange this for big band publication, as well as other titles that he'd composed over the years that they owned. This version of Good Bait includes the unison brass line after the instrumental solos. All of the BVC publications had numerous errors in pitch, rhythm and transposition. This publication of Good Bait has been newly edited and corrected. Notes to the Conductor: Even though the Gillespie RCA Victor performance is well-known, in my opinion it is a little fast, perhaps the natural result of playing the piece very often and wanting to make it more exciting. If you can find it, the 1948 Salle Pleyel concert recording has an excellent tempo. Good Bait should sound relaxed, with careful attention to dynamics. There are several soft dissonances in the writing, and I assure the band director that the notes have been double-checked for accuracy. Acknowledgements: We wish to thank Mia Dameron and Don Sickler for their support of our Tadd Dameron series of arrangements. Ranges: Trumpet 1 to C6 Trombone 1 to Bb 5 Recorded by Frank Sinatra with Count Basie
