Soloists can navigate the 16-measure solo using just a single scale over hip jazz chords. Burungkaka is an Indonesian folk song which is known throughout Malaysia. It is about an old parrot which sits near the window, singing. The children make fun of it in a good-natured manner. Originally arranged in 1997 for virtuoso jazz trombonist Albert Mangelsdorf and the WDR Big Band. Albert had recorded the piece many years earlier on a trio recording of his. Saxes double on Fl/Fl/Cl/Cl/Bcl. First alto doubles on soprano. Substitute saxophone parts are provided on the reverse side of the woodwind parts. 1st Tpt: C (2 ledger lines above staff). This clever, straight-8th feel piece for proficient groups was commissioned by the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association for the 2006 Arizona All-State Jazz Ensemble. Inspired by the classic 1959 Miles Davis album Kind Of Blue, other source material comes from a traditional Appalachian tune titled Cluck Old Hen. Upbeat and lighthearted, the chart borrows a 32-measure progression used in Miles Davis' composition So What. Brass ranges are moderate, and the bass part contains chord changes and suggested lines. This is an ideal opportunity for your group to enjoy the music of one of today's greatest jazz composers. Duration 3:50.  standard jazz ensemble plus opt. vibes Paying tribute to the wonderful music created by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays in the 1980's and 90's (notice the wordplay in the title), this driving original for medium advanced bands features an energetic groove and a tune that's both rhythmic and melodic. Suspended Animation is a contemporary straight-eighth feel with sections that can be opened up for any player to solo. The entire composition is built on only two suspended chords, and is written in a manner that makes it easy for young bands to quickly get into the piece. With only two chords to worry about, much of the anxiety of wrong notes is eliminated and the student can immediately concentrate on making music.
