Recorded by the Dave Pell Octet Written for Harry James From the Count Basie book of the '60s, this straight ahead blues swings with a sax section soli after the head. Features trumpet and tenor solos and two out-choruses of typical Basie ensemble finishing up. Includes guest tenor solo, but is optional. Recorded by Manhattan School of Music. For many years facsimile copies of Frank Foster's score and parts were reproduced and published by Walrus Music Publishing. This edition has been carefully prepared and engraved from these parts. Several note errors that were found in the original set of parts have been corrected as well. Articulations and dynamics that reflect the Count Basie Band interpretation have been included so that this arrangement may be faithfully reproduced. This would make a great festival piece or concert opener/closer!

Recorded by Artie Shaw (From the notes by Jeffrey Sultanof): Background: Tadd Dameron was one of the most influential composer/arrangers in American music. Born in 1917, he wrote for bands led by Jimmie Lunceford, Count Basie, Billy Eckstine (many original compositions later performed by the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra were originally written for Eckstine), Ted Heath and Tommy Dorsey. He also arranged for Sarah Vaughan, Pearl Bailey and the underrated Kay Penton. Dameron led various groups for live gigs and recordings, and the musicians he played with constituted a who's who of jazz. At one time or another his ensembles included Fats Navarro, Freddie Webster, Charlie Rouse, Kenny Clarke, Kai Winding, Wardell Gray, J.J. Johnson, Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, John Coltrane and Clifford Brown. Unfortunately Dameron was institutionalized in Kentucky for drug possession from 1958 through 1961. While still in prison, he contributed several arrangements to a Blue Mitchell album on Riverside Records, and when he was released, Riverside wanted him to make an album of his own. The Magic Touch was the result, and this resulted in various composing and arranging assignments, most notably for Benny Goodman, who commissioned several scores from Dameron for his 1962 big band that made an historic tour of the Soviet Union. The Music: Good Bait had originally been written for Count Basie, and was copyrighted in 1944. Dameron also arranged the tune for the Billy Eckstine Orchestra, and when that ensemble folded, Dizzy Gillespie added the setting to his book, playing it frequently. Basie began playing it in 1948 after Gillespie popularized it. In 1962, publisher Bregman, Vocco &Conn asked Dameron to arrange this for big band publication, as well as other titles that he'd composed over the years that they owned. This version of Good Bait includes the unison brass line after the instrumental solos. All of the BVC publications had numerous errors in pitch, rhythm and transposition. This publication of Good Bait has been newly edited and corrected. Notes to the Conductor: Even though the Gillespie RCA Victor performance is well-known, in my opinion it is a little fast, perhaps the natural result of playing the piece very often and wanting to make it more exciting. If you can find it, the 1948 Salle Pleyel concert recording has an excellent tempo. Good Bait should sound relaxed, with careful attention to dynamics. There are several soft dissonances in the writing, and I assure the band director that the notes have been double-checked for accuracy. Acknowledgements: We wish to thank Mia Dameron and Don Sickler for their support of our Tadd Dameron series of arrangements. ADAPTED FROM THE RECORDING BY BING CROSBY AND THE ANDREWS SISTERS RECORDED BY THE THELONIOUS MONK BIG BAND In 1962 Tadd Dameron was commissioned by Benny Goodman to arrange a number of pieces for an upcoming tour of Russia. Tadd turned out several great arrangements including Swift as the Wind, Our Delight, Good Bait, On a Misty Night, and this arrangement of Moon from the East. As far as we know this arrangement wasn't recorded and possibly never performed. The setting for the arrangement is a Middle Eastern feel with a fitting melody. The arrangement was written to feature Goodman as a soloist on top of the band. In keeping with our other Tadd Dameron arrangements, we have scored the solo clarinet part into the band so that it is playable with a standard big band lineup. Reed 1 is on clarinet throughout. Reed 2 is on alto saxophone and flute, reed 3 is on flute and tenor saxophone, reed 4 is on clarinet and tenor saxophone, and reed 5 is on baritone throughout. There is no solo section on this. Ranges: Trumpet 1 to E6 Trombone 1 to Ab4

SWINGIN' NUTCRACKER, THE
Retail Price: $349.98
Recorded by both Tadd Dameron and Benny Goodman Shorty Rogers arranged this jazz version of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker in 1960. This recording session took place in Los Angeles in May 1960 - at the same time and city that Ellington was recording Strayhorn's version of the Nutcracker. In fact, one session was held on the exact same day that Ellington was also recording it in Los Angeles: May 26.\r\n Shorty arranged much of this to feature himself on trumpet (trumpet 2) as well as trombone, tenor sax, and piano solos. In addition, the instrumentation featured 4 tenor saxophones and bass saxophone. Optional alternate parts have been included so that this may be played by a standard big band.\r\n The sound sample provided is the complete overture which features parts of most of the movements and will give you a good feel for the work. Movements: Like Nutty Overture; Nutty Marche; Blue Reeds; Swingin' Plum Fairy; Snowball; Six Pack; Flowers for the Cats; Dance Expresso; Pass the Duke; China Where?; Overture for Shorty. Recorded by Charlie Parker with Strings

Recorded by Jimmie Lunceford This arrangement is part of Frank Foster's Vintage Basie  Series, compositions performed and/or recorded by Count Basie and his world famous New Testament orchestra between 1953 and 1960. It's another straight ahead blues, for which that band was especially noted. Recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on Chairman Of The Board. The full ensemble blasts into the introductory chorus, followed by two choruses of the 'head' stated alternately by saxes and brass. Next comes a two-chorus saxophone section soli displaying no pyrotechnics, just simplicity and swing. A growling muted trumpet solo greases things up for a minute (on the recording the marvelous Snooky Young played the solo-no one did it better), backed up by trombones with a riff that must have been dated some 25 years prior to the recording!  Next of course what else but a typical 'Basie-styled' piano solo, couched in that All-American rhythm section format; you know the drill. After the piano the soft full ensemble takes over with a 24-bar build-up to the shout chorus, which is of course punctuated by Young's screaming open trumpet, and the piece ends with the customary dominant 13th chord with raised 11th.\r\n For many years facsimile copies of Frank Foster's score and parts were reproduced and published by Walrus Music Publishing. This edition has been carefully prepared and engraved from these parts. Several note errors that were found in the original set of parts have been corrected as well. Articulations and dynamics that reflect the Count Basie Band interpretation have been included so that this arrangement may be faithfully reproduced.
