Eli is Here ! – Bob Curnow
Due to Covid-19 The Bob Curnow Big Band was not able to
record this piece live. What you will hear is a Finale midi playback. We ask
your understanding and look forward to being able to provide a recording of the
great Curnow Big Band in the near future
Hear The Music! See The Music!
Bob Curnow dedicates this to his
new grandson Eli whose middle name is Wolfgang. So, he had to have his own
tune, right? Based on a medium slow,
swinging feel, this chart moves quickly into a Basie-ish style with the tenors
and trombones stating the theme. The 2nd statement is surrounded
with lots of lines that weave in and out. This is followed by a tenor sax solo. The full
ensemble then sets up the following trombone solo. The ensemble once again
takes over for before the drums state some short solo passages. The chart ends
as it began, nice and easy. 5-5-4-4 $50.00

Hear The Music! See The Music!
This Curnow original was inspired by the fact that there aren’t a lot of
bass features available for up-and-coming bassists. The tempo is set at about
100, and the chart opens up with your bass player soloing (written or improved)
for 12 bars before the band moves in with a cool, quiet, rich statement of the
theme. The bassist then solos (written or improvised) for another 24 bars
before the full band comes roaring in with a strong statement. The soloist then
continues for a bit before the band takes over again. The piece ends as it
began, with the band stating that cool statement of the theme to the end. Give
your bass player a shot. She (or he) deserves it. Two different bass parts are included; one
with a written solo throughout and one with just changes for the more mature
player. Moderate ranges for all makes
this a very accessible chart for most bands.

Connections – Patty Darling
This chart was commissioned for
the Fred Sturm Jazz Celebration Weekend and is one of Patty’s best charts yet. Patty Darling’s writing career has
skyrocketed because of her ability to write relevant, interesting contemporary
music, especially for younger players.
This piece is based on a terrific Hip Hop / Swing groove that you won’t
be able to get out of your head. It’s a guarantee that your band will love this
new piece by Patty. Solos are indicated for trumpet and guitar (or piano).
You’ll hear echoes of Patty’s chart on the Radiohead classic “Idioteque” without all the demands of that chart. Moderate ranges
for all makes this a very accessible chart for most bands. 5-5-4-5 (opt. vibes) $50.00
Mission Trail – (Gene Roland/Edited by Bob Curnow)
Hear The Music! See The Music!
Although Sierra Music published
the original version of this cool chart in the past, Bob Curnow decided to edit it and make the Stan Kenton Orchestra piece a lot easier and fun to play. The instrumentation
has been changed to standard big band, and the demands for extreme high trumpet
playing have been altered (works very well). The original of this great Latin
chart was recorded on “Viva Kenton.” This
is a laid-back, moderate tempo tune that brings you the best of Kenton and
Roland. You’ll love it.
5-4-4-4 $55.00
Rabble Rouser – arr. Billy Byers
Hear The Music! See The Music!
The Count Basie Orchestra did-does the “barn burner” charts better
than almost any other big band. This Billy
Byers original starts out hot and never cools down. The tenor saxophone is
the chosen soloist, and the full ensemble writing just keeps on keepin’ on.
Talk about lifting your audience
out of their chairs; WOW! This one will do it. 5-4-4-4 $55.00
Baubles, Bangles & Beads - arr. Chico O'Farrill
This fantastic chart swings like all the greatest Basie classics. As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on “Broadway Hollywood… Basie’s Way,” Chico O’Farrill’s arrangement of Baubles, Bangles & Beads is a guaranteed hit with your players an audiences. An iconic melody supports killer solos for Tenor Saxophone and Piano. Flute, Clarinet, and Bass Clarinet doubles give this chart a unique and wonderful character. 5-4-4-4
Call Me Irresponsible
As Recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on "Pop Goes the Basie." Call Me Irresponsible has that smooth, medium swing to get your listeners swaying back and forth. This chart is easy enough for most bands to play, but truly shines when performed with a Trombone soloist with charisma. 5-4-4-4
I'll Get By
As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on "Basie Picks the Winners." I'll Get By starts soft, then shouts to get your audience's attention. A subtle line of piano solos lets your pianist carry that Basie harmony throughout this short, but wonderful, chart. 5-4-4-4
Shangri-La
As Recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on "Pop Goes the Basie." Call Me Irresponsible features plentiful snippets of solos for Tenor 1, Trumpet 4, Trombone 1, and Piano. Growling plunger solos form a dialogue between Trumpet and Trombone throughout, while a melodious Tenor Sax line carries the tune. 5-4-4-4
This Love of Mine
As Recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on "Frankly Basie - Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra." A slow swing by bucket muted brass carries this song smoothly along. Long, open solos for Trumpet 4 and Piano will give your talented players space to show their creativity. 5-4-4-4
Home At Last - Steely Dan
Bob's fresh rendition of one of the most popular Steely Dan charts ever. “Home At Last,”
recorded on the album “AJA,” has solo space for Tenor and Trumpet. Reasonable
brass ranges and an easy shuffle-rock feel make this an accessible Medium chart.
5-4-4-4
Twists and Turns V.1
Patty Darling brings us yet another great contemporary chart, incorporating multiple solo opportunities. Have fun and enjoy the drive! 5-4-4-4
The Thrill is Gone
Henderson and Brown's "The Thrill is Gone," arranged here by Don Dimick for the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band. A strong Tenor Sax soloist can really make this piece their own. Piano is tacit throughout. This moving ballad makes for a wonderful interlude in any set. 5-5-5-2
Fanfare For An Uncommon Man
Rich DeRosa wrote this magnificent piece as a tribute to Bob Curnow. The piece moves from a celebratory feast of sound into a contemporary fusion feel, a guitar solo, more wonderful ensemble writing and ends with an amazing splash of the best big band writing you’ll find anywhere, anytime. 5-5-5-4.

Once again, Patty Darling "nails it." This wonderful and truly very exciting chart, based on a powerful half-time funk feel is, yet again, an amazing chart by this incredible composer. The solo features either (or both) piano or trumpet. As with most of Patty's music, the brass ranges are quite reasonable, making this a very playable chart. 5-4-4-4.

swinging samba featuring tenor sax and trombone. What a great, refreshing take
on the big band samba this is. Moderate ranges for all makes this a very
accessible chart for most bands, although this requires a rhythm section that
can cook together and drive this chart. Sierra Music is very proud to publish
this one. 5-4-4-4 $65.00

Hear The Music! See The Music!
Bob Curnow has taken the brilliant arrangements done for the Stan Kenton Orchestra by Ralph Charmichael and created a medley
of fresh, modern versions containing Angels
We Have Heard on High, The Holly and the Ivy, O, Tannenbaum and Good King Wenceslas. He then arranged
these wonderful carols for standard big band
instrumentation (5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, guitar,
bass and drums.) 5-4-4-4 $65.00
Singing Oyster, The (Pro) – Dee Barton
Hear The Music! See The Music!
This is one of the most popular
charts on the “Jazz Compositions of Dee
Barton” recording by the Stan Kenton
Orchestra. This is the original arrangement as recorded by
Kenton. There is an edited version arranged for standard big band
instrumentation. Starting lightly
with unison saxophones, in a lilting, bright, swinging ¾, the chart then adds
brass backgrounds, growing in intensity and leading to the trumpet solo. That
solo is then followed by some of the coolest (and most challenging) ensemble
writing ever. There is a good bit of unison line playing by everyone in the
band. The drums then bring the full band into a shout chorus that lifts you out
of your chair. There is a return to the lighter side for a bit and then back to
the roaring shout. It all finishes with a cute piano finish on sol do (those
solfeggio classes finally came in handy).
(Standard 5 saxophones, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, tuba, piano, bass and
drums) 5-5-5-3 $

Hear The Music! (This audio is the UNEDITED version, and slightly different than the notes of this chart) See The Music!
Of all the arrangements done of
this iconic Strayhorn/Ellington standard, Don
Sebesky’s chart, written for the Maynard
Ferguson Orchestra (and recorded numerous times) ranks as one of the best, most
creative and challenging versions. Bob
Curnow has complimented the chart by scoring it for standard big band
instrumentation (5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, bass and drums.)
This one really moves, and it will move your band and audiences. 5-4-4-3
