Hear The Music!
See The Music!
Bob Curnow dedicates this to his
new grandson Eli whose middle name is Wolfgang. So, he had to have his own
tune, right? Based on a medium slow,
swinging feel, this chart moves quickly into a Basie-ish style with the tenors
and trombones stating the theme. The 2nd statement is surrounded
with lots of lines that weave in and out. This is followed by a tenor sax solo. The full
ensemble then sets up the following trombone solo. The ensemble once again
takes over for before the drums state some short solo passages. The chart ends
as it began, nice and easy. 5-5-4-4 $50.00
Fitz (Edited) – Gene Roland (Edited by Bob Curnow)
Gene Roland wrote for the Stan Kenton
Orchestra for almost the entire history of the Kenton Band. He wrote the
entire “Adventure in Blues” album
for that band, and this is just one of many highly original, swinging charts on
that recording. This is the edited
version written for standard big band instrumentation (works great). This
chart features the trombone section in a medium tempo blues. The Kenton Band
played this chart for years. The soloist, of course, is your top trombonist.
The piece was originally written for Bob Fitzpatrick who played on the Kenton
Band and was Stan’s lead trombonist for many years. You will love this
adaptation, which makes the chart very playable for most bands. 5-4-4-3

Hear The Music!
See The Music!
This Curnow original was inspired by the fact that there aren’t a lot of
bass features available for up-and-coming bassists. The tempo is set at about
100, and the chart opens up with your bass player soloing (written or improved)
for 12 bars before the band moves in with a cool, quiet, rich statement of the
theme. The bassist then solos (written or improvised) for another 24 bars
before the full band comes roaring in with a strong statement. The soloist then
continues for a bit before the band takes over again. The piece ends as it
began, with the band stating that cool statement of the theme to the end. Give
your bass player a shot. She (or he) deserves it. Two different bass parts are included; one
with a written solo throughout and one with just changes for the more mature
player. Moderate ranges for all makes
this a very accessible chart for most bands.

A Night At The Golden Nugget (Edited) - arr. by Bob Curnow
Gene Roland wrote for the Stan Kenton Orchestra for almost the entire history of the Kenton Band. He wrote the entire “Adventure in Blues” album for that band, and this is just one of many highly original, swinging charts on that recording. This is the edited version written for standard big band instrumentation. There is also the Pro version available with original instrumentation. Bob Curnow’s edition of this eases some of the challenges of the original along with changing the instrumentation. It makes this a lot more fun to play. Alto sax and trumpet are soloists on this medium blues swinger. Roland at his best! 5-4-4-4
At Long Last Love – arr. Billy Byers
As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on “This Time by Basie,”
this arrangement by Billy Byers of Cole Porter’s melody is pure Basie. Opening
with a short Basie-ish figure, the band then swings at a bright tempo into a
terrific version of this great melody. Byers really understood what the Basie Band was, and this chart is no
exception. There is a solo for tenor saxophone. Moderate ranges for all. 5-4-4-4

Connections – Patty Darling
This chart was commissioned for
the Fred Sturm Jazz Celebration Weekend and is one of Patty’s best charts yet. Patty Darling’s writing career has
skyrocketed because of her ability to write relevant, interesting contemporary
music, especially for younger players.
This piece is based on a terrific Hip Hop / Swing groove that you won’t
be able to get out of your head. It’s a guarantee that your band will love this
new piece by Patty. Solos are indicated for trumpet and guitar (or piano).
You’ll hear echoes of Patty’s chart on the Radiohead classic “Idioteque” without all the demands of that chart. Moderate ranges
for all makes this a very accessible chart for most bands. 5-5-4-5 (opt. vibes) $50.00
Rabble Rouser – arr. Billy Byers
The Count Basie Orchestra did-does the “barn burner” charts better
than almost any other big band. This Billy
Byers original starts out hot and never cools down. The tenor saxophone is
the chosen soloist, and the full ensemble writing just keeps on keepin’ on. Talk about lifting your audience
out of their chairs; WOW! This one will do it. 5-4-4-4 $55.00
That’s All – arr. Billy Byers
As recorded on “Count Basie Picks the Winners,” this wonderful Billy Byers chart takes this lovely
standard into a whole new world. There is a bit of flute to be played by your 1st
Tenor, there is a trumpet and piano solo, and there is the exquisite writing of
Byers, creating great shout choruses and subtle voicing for the Basie Band. You will love this one.
Very moderate ranges for all.
5-4-4-4 $55.00
Yuriko - Billy Byers
Once again Billy Byers has created the quintessential, original chart for the Count Basie Orchestra. This one is
recorded on
“Basie Land.” The easy swing feel/tempo makes this
piece very accessible for most bands. There is a bit of flute in two saxophone
parts. There are solos for tenor and trumpet and piano. Of course there is the
required, masterful “shout chorus” that leads to a quiet, cool ending. Moderate
ranges for all makes this a very accessible chart for most bands. 5-4-4-4

Baubles, Bangles & Beads - arr. Chico O'Farrill
This fantastic chart swings like all the greatest Basie classics. As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on “Broadway Hollywood… Basie’s Way,” Chico O’Farrill’s arrangement of Baubles, Bangles & Beads is a guaranteed hit with your players and audience. An iconic melody supports killer solos for Tenor Saxophone and Piano. Flute, Clarinet, and Bass Clarinet doubles give this chart a unique and wonderful character. 5-4-4-4
Call Me Irresponsible
As Recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on "Pop Goes the Basie." Call Me Irresponsible has that smooth, medium swing to get your listeners swaying back and forth. This chart is easy enough for most bands to play, but truly shines when performed with a Trombone soloist with charisma. 5-4-4-4
I'll Get By
As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on "Basie Picks the Winners." I'll Get By starts soft, then shouts to get your audience's attention. A subtle line of piano solos lets your pianist carry that Basie harmony throughout this short, but wonderful, chart. 5-4-4-4
Shangri-La
As Recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on "Pop Goes the Basie." Call Me Irresponsible features plentiful snippets of solos for Tenor 1, Trumpet 4, Trombone 1, and Piano. Growling plunger solos form a dialogue between Trumpet and Trombone throughout, while a melodious Tenor Sax line carries the tune. 5-4-4-4
This Love of Mine
As Recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on "Frankly Basie - Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra." A slow swing by bucket muted brass carries this song smoothly along. Long, open solos for Trumpet 4 and Piano will give your talented players space to show their creativity. 5-4-4-4
Home At Last - Steely Dan
Bob's fresh rendition of one of the most popular Steely Dan charts ever. “Home At Last,”

Fanfare For An Uncommon Man
Rich DeRosa wrote this magnificent piece as a tribute to Bob Curnow. The piece moves from a celebratory feast of sound into a contemporary fusion feel, a guitar solo, more wonderful ensemble writing and ends with an amazing splash of the best big band writing you’ll find anywhere, anytime. 5-5-5-4.

Crunch
Crunch is
yet another brilliant original in the growing, much-admired catalog of Patty
Darling. It is set in a somewhat laid-back swing feel with solos space for
trumpet, baritone saxophone, trombone and bass.
Sweet Spot
Sweet Spot,
one of Bill Holman’s originals written for his own band (a feature for
the late Carl Saunders) starts out easy with a cool vamp-like intro leading
into the trumpet solo.
Alone - arr. Bob Curnow
Fully re-done in Finale notation! This chart was based on the music of Blood Sweat and Tears.
Mission Trail – (Gene Roland/Edited by Bob Curnow)
Although Sierra Music published
the original version of this cool chart in the past, Bob Curnow decided to edit it and make the Stan Kenton Orchestra piece a lot easier and fun to play. The instrumentation
has been changed to standard big band, and the demands for extreme high trumpet
playing have been altered (works very well). The original of this great Latin
chart was recorded on “Viva Kenton.” This
is a laid-back, moderate tempo tune that brings you the best of Kenton and
Roland. You’ll love it.
